Skid Steer Loader Uses in Landfills: Collection, Compaction & Site Maintenance Guide

Skid steer loaders play an important role in landfill operations due to their flexibility, efficiency, and versatility, being able to adapt to complex, narrow, and harsh environmental conditions. Their specific functions are as follows:

1. Garbage Collection and Transportation

  • Short-distance transfer: Inside landfills, skid steer loaders can quickly concentrate and transfer scattered garbage (such as domestic waste and construction waste debris) to compaction areas, stacking points, or beside transport vehicles (like garbage trucks). They are especially suitable for narrow areas where large equipment cannot enter.

  • Cleanup of scattered garbage: For small scattered garbage and scraps, skid steer loaders can easily collect them with buckets or forks, avoiding the formation of sanitary dead corners due to garbage accumulation.

2. Garbage Compaction and Leveling

  • Preliminary compaction: Use buckets to push and gather loose garbage, reducing the volume of garbage and improving the utilization rate of the site. Especially in the initial treatment of landfills, they can cooperate with large compactors to complete auxiliary compaction in local areas.

  • Site leveling: Level the ground in the garbage stacking area to create a stable foundation for subsequent garbage stacking, vehicle driving, or equipment operation, and at the same time avoid water accumulation (water accumulation in landfills is prone to breeding bacteria and odors).

3. Auxiliary Equipment and Material Handling

  • Loading and unloading assistance: When garbage transport vehicles (such as dump trucks) unload, skid steer loaders can help push the spilled garbage back to the designated area, or cooperate with the forklift function to load and unload garbage bins and small waste boxes.

  • Material classification: If landfills involve simple classification (such as sorting recyclables from other garbage), skid steer loaders can transport classified materials to designated areas by replacing different attachments (such as clamps).

4. Site Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Road cleaning: Remove scattered garbage, sludge, or debris from internal roads in landfills to ensure the safe passage of transport vehicles and operating equipment.

  • Snow/standing water treatment: After rain and snow, snowplows can be used to clear road snow, or buckets can be used to drain standing water on the site to maintain a stable working environment.

  • Slope trimming: Trim the slopes of landfills to prevent garbage from sliding down and facilitate the covering of anti-seepage membranes or soil layers.

5. Adaptation to Multi-functional Attachments, Enhancing Operational Diversity

  • Skid steer loaders can quickly replace a variety of attachments to further expand their applications in landfills:

    • Breakers: Crush large hard objects in garbage (such as concrete blocks, metal scraps) for subsequent processing.

    • Log grapples/grippers: Grab large debris such as branches and tires for centralized processing.

    • Vacuum suction cups: Adsorb scattered light garbage (such as plastic films, paper) to improve cleaning efficiency.
